What kind of games would you like to see more of on Newgrounds?

Posted by Chris - 1 month ago

Been thinking a bit about the different projects I want to work on in 2025. I've got a big notebook full of things I want to do but I'm also wondering what kind of games users on here would like to see more of?

This year I've put out 8 games so far, have 2 I'll probably wrap up before the end of the year and have parked like 4 that I aim to get back to at some point. Next year I think I might put out less but bigger games.

As for the remainder of 2024, I have a couple of things on the go. I've got that Pumpkin GameBoy game I'm making which is pretty clunky if I'm being honest. Learning my way around the hardware and its limitations is making implementing simple functions quite time consuming and those who know me know that I like to get things done fast. I don't know if GameBoy dev is going to be something I get deep into haha but oh well it was a nice change of pace and its been fun to load it up on a flash cart and show people. I'll probably stick that up here at some point along with the ROM.

The final thing I have is a Christmas Mazza game that I'll release in December. Its not Crackhouse of Illusion, but I still intend to finish that game at some point.

By the way, I'm going to try to make more of an effort with my social media going forward, I've said this before and its something I really suck at but if you'd like to follow me on BlueSky I'll be trying to post more updates on my projects over there as well as here on Newgrounds. Some final questions then for you to help me with:

1. What kind of games would you like to see more of on Newgrounds?

2. What is your favourite game that I released this year?

A game with Voices

And maybe i can be one of them ;)

I’ll check out your other work and see if theres anything I can find for you

I would like to see more Tactical role playing games similar to Final fantasy Tactics.

My favorite game you released this year was Stay Indoors.

@DoctorStrongbad

I’m a big fan of tactical RPGs and would love to make one.

1. Some sort of super simplified RPG game, I don't know if you know Slice & Dice but I love it. A crew of weirdo heroes with different abilities is always enticing

2. Mazza was just very nostalgic, back when every minigames website had 30 Mario clones I and would play all of them, plus British humor is always fum

I haven't played Slice and Dice but I'll check it out. I've been wanting to do an RPG on here for a while now. Something thats around 5 or so hours long.

Mazza was a stand out for me too. Theres a new Mazza coming out next month :)

Roguelikes! There aren't many of them on Newgrounds anymore, at least from what I've seen!

I have a couple of ideas that would be suitable for this. Definitely something I'd like to tackle.

There's two things I'm looking for in a game on NG

-Arcade style, jump into quickly and play without any long intro or tutorial

-Mobile compatible

Mobile is something I've been trying to think about lately. Anything that doesn't really require complex inputs should be a candidate.

A game…
Where you can do ANYTHING!
But no actually, maybe like a racing game, but it’s 2D and it’s a mixture of happy wheels and Mario kart.

That could be interesting. Like a side scrolling version of Mario Kart

As a fellow game developer, I tend to find that the web game audience in general tends to prefer games that are easy to pick up and play for a few minutes, but which don't require much of a time investment to understand or make progress in.
That doesn't necessarily mean small games in terms of content, but just games that you can sit down and beat in maybe like an hour or two at most. Personally, I also feel like the web audience likes the illusion of challenge, but does not actually like challenge itself.

As for my answers to your questions:
1. Personally, I'd like to see more unconventional art games that are more personal to the author: I'm tired of these kinda voiceless mascot games and tribute pieces (they can be fun for a while, but its the norm now, and I think that's a bit boring).
2. My favorite game from this year was Meatball the Mite. Shoot Your Goo and Kiwiman X-TREME were also good though.

I definitely think that games which don't require much investment to get good at are a good thing to develop for the web audience. My game Bastard Aliens was something I made in about 6 hours and is super easy to play, and it is a very close second for my highest rated game on the site.

@Chris and maybe a bit of voice acting too, just to bring out the color and expressiveness of the characters.

If it were 3D it would be hard to render everything in the game itself, with that 3D capability I’d love to see it work the same way as Road trip adventure did, well if it had a story or plot line of being the world racing champion.

Yeah voice acting is something I want to work towards including in my games at some point. Just to give them that extra bit of polish. I don't know if I'll ever tackle 3D though.

These are ideas; creating games for Newgrounds events like Flash Forward Jam, and Pico Day.

The types of games I’d like to see more of on Newgrounds are collaborations where each person brings their own specialized skill set to the table. I think this approach would help foster a stronger community centered around creativity.

Openness to player feedback. It also show appreciation for those interacting with the project.

I find it difficult to carve out time to sit down and enjoy playing games—not just on Newgrounds, but in general—because there are so much shit going on.

In this context, I think it’s challenging to ask players to invest more than 20 minutes in a game. With so many options available, even a high-quality project needs to effectively communicate why the player should choose it; otherwise, they simply won’t play.

Additionally, it’s important to target a specific niche rather than aiming for broad appeal. By focusing on a niche, you’ll cultivate a dedicated group of players who truly appreciate and understand your skills as a game dev.

I’m excited for Christmas Mazza! My favorite game of yours is Mazza.

Wow thats some really great advice! Thanks :)

A few people have said they like something that they can pick up and play so far without requiring a big time investment. I think theres room for both big and small games but I think its good to remember that smaller games still have a really important place on here. Its very tempting to try to make something big because it feels like bigger should equal better. But a quick fun experience is better than a long dull experience that most won't bother to finish anyway.

Mazza is my favourite game too haha. I have a lot of things I want to do with the character going forward.

I miss:

- RPGs
- Exploration
- Challenging and Fun Platformers/Puzzles
- Better development on Story (not only on Visual Novels)
- Better art
- Survival (horror or not)
- Games like Forager

Now I disagree NG or other indie game websites are in need of roguelikes/rougelites, in fact I think it's saturated.

I'm a big RPG fan and would like to see one of those here on Newgrounds. The obvious issue is they're huge games that take a long time to make but I'd love to try making something around the 5-6 hour mark to put up here.

Joker games, games that include the joker...

1. I'd like to see more games with controller and fullscreen support along with a filter for them for in the games portal API options.

2. Mazza is the game I like most from you since it reminds me of Clarence's Big Chance from over a decade ago. I don't often come across games with a British sense of humor.

I try to include British sense of humour in all my games to some extent. Mazza obviously goes the hardest with this though. I hope Mazza Claus will live up to the first game when I release that in December.

as another fellow hobby dev, id love to see the games you personally want to make. dont take it too seriously, just use it to express yourself or to showcase a cool idea you have. as long as you are having fun and making what you want to make you are all good

I agree with that. The issue is I have about 27 ideas in my note book that I want to make haha. I figure I can gauge which of those people might like to see from this thread.

1. Anything with mechanical depth and a world to explore.
2. Either Mazza or Stay Indoors.

I also like the exploration aspect. I have an idea for a follow up to Stay Indoors that I hope will improve the exploration of the first.

1 I love roguelike games like Isaac, Dead estate Or very good puzzles like Dont starve
2 of all your games I played "Politics.USA" And "bastard aliens"
